Abstract on The www. of Politics
The internet is changing the way to communicate, the way to get information and the way how to offer information. The internet is global and regional, interactive and static, individual and for everybody. The virtual world brings together and is dividing. The internet builds and constitutes its very own society ignoring the social life and the influences of the "real world" we live in. All that takes place at the same time.
The Cyberworld is a strange thing. Nobody is able to give it a real definition. To understand it to its total extent seems even more impossible. And it still looks like to have a big importance and influence on our real world. But - by the way: what and where is our real world? Where are we going to and where do we want to live tomorrow? And how?
Political, social and public life will be more and more part of the internet. Maybe even take place in the virtual world. At this stage the virtual world may become reality with all its consequences.
The internet is changing the framework we live in for a new dimension. Who designs the framework, who will be in and who will be out? Will we be able to use the Internet in order to promote sustainable development over the word? We have to find answers to those question, because we and our children are the generations, who have to cope with changes caused by the internet. We have to deal with the new technology, the new possibilities and dangers. We have to find out where and how we want to live tomorrow.
Table of Contents of our Study Group:
Introduction
The rise of the net-generation?
We are facing the first generation being grown up with the Internet.
What differs them from other generations? Are they the first generation outside the real world, lost in Cyberspace? Is there a new way of thinking coming up?
The difference between virtual and real?
We want to focus on the difference between virtuality and reality. Where does the one end and the other start? How does virtuality influence real politics?
Main Topics
The competing society models
Which of the society models will be the winner of tomorrows Internet society? Which model would serve best the ideas of sustainability? Economic growth, social standing-together, or liberal democracy seem hardly to exist at the same time. What is the direction we are heading for at the moment?
Democracy, Human rights and the Internet
NGOs (non-governmental organizations) and political institutions use the Internet already to build networks and to promote the fast exchange of information. But what is the advantage for the normal citizen and how can we support a higher participation in politics? Does the Internet put the existing democracies into question?
Bridging the Digital Divide
The Internet looks to many disadvanteged states like a possibility to get out of their situation. Is there are a real possibility? Or does the Internet enforce a new inequality between the "haves" and "have nots" of information access?
Conclusion
How can the Internet - as the communicator of young and new generations - lead to more sustainability?
To conclude all the topics we should give some proposals how to use the Internet in the most positive way. Can the Internet lead to more sustainabilitiy in a social, political and ecological way?
Let us hope that we will have a good and efficient discussion during the next weeks in our Forum. Have fun!
